Long-term and Overall
Objectives
The Long-term Development
Objective of the proposed Danube Regional Project is to contribute to
sustainable human development in the Danube River Basin and the wider Black
Sea area through reinforcing the capacities of the participating countries in
developing effective mechanisms for regional cooperation and coordination in
order to ensure protection of international waters, sustainable management of
natural resources and biodiversity.
The Overall Objective of
the Danube Regional Project is to complement the activities of the ICPDR
required to provide a regional approach to the development of national
policies and legislation and the definition of priority actions for pollution
control with particular attention to achieving sustainable ecological effects
within the Danube River Basin and the Black Sea Area.
The Specific Objective of
Phase 1 of the project is to prepare and initiate basin-wide capacity
building activities, which will be consolidated in the second phase. In this
current phase, altogether 20 project components with 88 activities will be
carried out thereby establishing a solid base for the implementation of Phase
2 of the Project.
Phase 2 will be
implemented from November 2003 to October 2006, building on the results
achieved in the first phase.
The following project components are designed to respond
to the overall development objective:
- Creation of sustainable ecological conditions for
land use and water management;
- Capacity building and reinforcement of
transboundary cooperation for the improvement of water quality and
environmental standards in the Danube River Basin;
- Strengthening of public involvement in
environmental decision making and reinforcement of community actions for
pollution reduction and protection of ecosystems;
- Reinforcement of monitoring, evaluation and
information systems to control transboundary pollution, and to reduce
nutrients and harmful substances.
